How Blood Circulation Works: A Clear Guide

Circulation is the movement of blood through the heart, lungs and blood vessels. Understanding the basic system makes supplement claims much easier to evaluate.

The heart as a pump

The heart generates the pressure that moves blood through pulmonary and systemic circuits. Its right side sends blood toward the lungs, while the left side sends oxygenated blood through the body.

Arteries and arterioles

Arteries carry blood away from the heart. Smaller arterioles help regulate resistance and distribution of blood flow through changes in smooth-muscle tone.

Capillaries

Capillaries are tiny vessels where gases, nutrients, water and metabolic products exchange between blood and tissues.

Veins

Veins return blood toward the heart and function as a major blood-volume reservoir. Valves, muscle contractions and breathing help venous return, particularly in the limbs.

Where nitric oxide fits

Endothelial cells produce signaling molecules including nitric oxide that help regulate vascular tone. This normal physiology is more complex than the marketing phrase “boost blood flow.”
